When it comes to cropping images or photos in Figma, you're typically adjusting the visible range. However, Figma doesn't have a direct option to crop an image into a specific shape, like a circle. Luckily, there are a few creative workarounds you can use to achieve the circular crop effect. Whether you’re designing a profile picture or simply want a more polished look, these methods will help you get the job done quickly and efficiently.
Method 1: Using Shape Fill to Make a Circle
If you're working on a design and need your photo to fit into a circular shape, this method is simple and effective. Here’s how you can do it:
- Insert a Circle:
First, go to the bottom menu bar and insert a circle. Resize it to your desired dimensions, keeping in mind how large or small you want the final cropped image to appear. - Change the Fill to Image:
With the circle selected, head over to the left sidebar and click on the Fill option. Instead of the default solid color fill, switch it to an Image Fill. - Upload Your Photo:
Next, upload the photo or image you want to crop into a circle. Once it’s uploaded, the image will automatically fill the circle, giving you that clean circular crop effect.
This method is great for quick, clean image crops, especially if you need a fast solution to fit images into predefined shapes.
Method 2: Using a Mask to Create a Circular Crop
Masks are a powerful tool in Figma that allow you to hide portions of an image, giving you control over its visibility and shape. Here’s how you can use a mask to crop your photo into a circle:
- Insert the Circle Underneath:
Start by inserting a circle and placing it on the bottom layer of your design. This circle will define the shape of your cropped image. - Place the Image Above:
Insert the photo or image you want to crop and place it directly above the circle. Don’t worry if the image covers the circle completely—this will be adjusted later. - Select Both the Circle and Image:
Hold down Ctrl and select both the circle and the image/photo (you can also select them via the right-side layer panel). - Create the Mask:
Right-click on the selection and choose Use as Mask from the context menu. This action will mask the photo, trimming it to fit the shape of the circle. - Adjust the Image as Needed:
Finally, you can reposition or resize the image within the mask to perfect the visible area. You can also adjust the circle's size if necessary to ensure the image fits just right.
